Kaleidoscope afghan and cannibalism

So I am trying to make one of these. That pattern calls for an H hook, which is 5mm, but that hook didn’t make a good fabric. Of course, the H hook ‘goes with’ worsted weight yarn, which 8ply isn’t.

I’ve had the damndest time trying to get the hexagons to lay flat. 5mm didn’t work, nor did 4mm. a size 7 (4.5?) works best, but still isn’t flat enough for my liking.

For some reason my first three had two rows of a color each. The one with the pattern has 6 colors in each, and so do most of the Rav ones. So, with that coloring sorted out, I am going to try and use the variegated yarns I have in them as well. Further research, but looking at the pattern, says that the WRITTEN pattern has two rows of three colors, which might be why my originals were like that.

At the moment the plan is a color for the first row, black for the second and a variegated for the third. What the next three end up being I have no idea. But the dtr row will be variegated.

Doing it this way will help me use up those small fragments that aren’t big enough for ‘anything.’ :) I’ll also be cannibalising a whole host of bits and pieces that I started, either to try or with grand plans to make something. So far I’ve cannibalised a Moorish Mosaic bit of motif and I am now just undoing what was a granny triangle shawl. I had a cream scrap in the box for the other scrap blanket which I wasn’t sure about..so I started making it for that one, but it turned out not to have enough yarn to make a full square, so I restarted it and made two hexagon centres. Waste not, want not, eh?

I think another reason why they hexagons weren’t laying flat was due to me not using a double treble. I was using a regular old treble for some reason, and that may have been pulling the sides up. I’ll continue on using DTR, and see what that does for a full motif.

For the record, dear self…when posting my email, it is TAGS, plural, not TAG singular.

Is afghan crochet very different/difficult to regular ol’ crochet? I’ve honestly never looked into it b/c Im intimidated! Hehe……Kaleidoscope afghans look gorgeous!!

Also, I love the term “cannibalism” a lot! I had heard “frogging” before but that one wasn’t very exciting…hehe

Looking forward to seeing the finished afghan!

I wouldn’t say it is much different. More ends if you do motifs of course, and then motif placement, but you can take a handful of yarn and a hook anywhere and make a couple – kind of like socks. It might take a full year to get enough motifs for an afghan, but if you aren’t pressed for time, whats the problem? One big “chain 545 and work in pattern for 712 rows” type afghan would bore me to tears.

I like calling it cannibalism. The term ‘frogging’ (in my head) means undo what you’ve done and start again, or just undo it and store the yarn.Cannibalism (for me) seems to imply frogging a scrap of work (in my case samples of things, or scraps I’ve worked out to store easier) and turning it straight into something else.
